Essay Competition

Partnership

This competition is being conducted in partnership with the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange Limited.

Objectives of the Competition:

It is expected that this competition will achieve the following objectives:-

  • Clarify the roles and mission of the TTSEC and the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange Limited (TTSE);
  • Increase the visibility of the TTSEC and the TTSE;
  • Educate the youth so that they will be investor literate; and
  • Empower the youth so that they can make informed decisions and guide and inform their families and communities.

Period

February 18 to March 06, 2013

Project Guidelines

  • The applicant must first complete a registration form to participate in the competition. Forms may be accessed from the TTSEC’s website, via a link on the TTSE’s website or from the Commission’s offices. Once the registration form has been completed, students can proceed to select one question (according to their age group). A hard copy of the registration form must also be submitted with the copies which are being dropped at the Commission’s offices;
  • Submissions can be sent via mail: IEproject2013@ttsec.org.tt  or delivered to the Commission by end of business on March 06, 2013;
  • Projects will become the property of the Commission and may be used by the Commission at any time;
  • The judging of the projects will be done by a panel selected by the Commission;
  • The judges’ decision is final;
  • Applicants will be required to provide proof of their age once they have been selected as a finalist;
  • Immediate relatives of the employees of the Trinidad and Tobago Securities and Exchange Commission and the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange Limited are not eligible to participate.

Project –Topics/ Questions

Please choose ONE of the following questions from Group A or Group B:
Group A: 18-21 years old

  1. A) Analyse a securities product that is currently available on the local market and describe how it works and how it is traded. B) Prepare a proposal indicating how you would educate and empower your peers (18-21 years) to invest in this product.
  2. Companies often require financing to support their operations.  Discuss the differences between debt and equity financing and outline why a company would choose one over the other.

 

Group B: 22-25 years old

  1. Research and discuss the nature of the business, operations and price movements of any company listed on the local stock exchange and recommend whether investors should buy, sell or hold the listed equity.
  2. Prepare a communications/public education proposal which can be used to educate and empower your peers (22-25 years) to invest in the securities market.

Project Requirements

Submissions should not exceed 12 pages and must be original, factual, well researched and well written. If submissions exceed this page limit, the participant will be disqualified.

Projects should include the following:

  • Project Description/Introduction
  • Project Details
  • Objective (s)
  • Methodology
  • Focal Areas
  • Analysis
  • Any supporting documents

Content

  • The work must be presented in a clear format;
  • If sources are used, they must be cited accordingly; plagiarism will result in automatic disqualification.
  • Examples can be used but they must not overshadow the body of the project.

Spelling

  • Standard English must be used.

Presentation
All entries must be:-

  • Type written in Cambria, Times New Roman or Arial font type with a font size of 12;
  • Double-spaced with standard page margins;
  • Numbered.

Grading Scheme

30 % - Knowledge
30% - Interpretation/Analysis
20% - Presentation
20% - Language

Group A: 18-21 years
First Prize –                                                   Samsung Galaxy Tab + $1500.00
Second Prize -                                               Samsung Galaxy Tab + $1000.00
Third Prize -                                                  Samsung Galaxy Tab + $500.00
Group B: 22-25 years
First Prize                                                      $7500.00
Second Prize                                                 $5000.00
Third Prize                                                    $3500.00
The Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange will introduce the winners of Group B to its broker members so that a decision can be made regarding the investment of their prizes.
